I have written an unsolicited sequel for Avatar, is somewhat in line with your proposed idea but not quite, it focuses on the meaning and potential purpose of Eywa, it brings the Pandoran ocean into play but is not just about that, it also brings in many of the original characters, I'll be foolishly sending it to JC which I know he will reject, once that happens I will post it on a Fanfic website, if anyone is interested, I will throw in the link once done. There are so many alternates and possibilities to this story, mine is merely my interpretation of those elements I thought were the most meaningful. Needless to say, I like your line of thinking. It seens almost logical to think that the Pandoran wonders extend way beyond Pandora itself.

Sounds like the plot line from Orson Scott Card's Ender series -- Which I'm sure Cameron would have no problem borrowing for a hacked-out sequel. Oh well.

Not sure if the humans come out as the good guys per se, but it certainly would make the whole situation more grey, particularly if the "final plan" of the creator race wasn't particularly good for the Na'vi either.

Your storyline would also make it possible to make humanity the good guys. I know a lot of folks like to hate on themselves, but it's just not my cup of tea.

It's funny, I wasn't really thinking of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams) as much as I was thinking about Larry Niven's Ringworld. That, and a bit of Orson Scott Card's Homecoming series. But in the spirit of Hollywood taking a mish-mash of sci-fi, elements of each could work, depending on the tone of the movie.

So does the 3rd movie begin with "and the answer is 42"? :) Your storyline actually would make for an interesting movie and could make for some very interesting prequel scifi novels.
